Sports and Recreation Department is the hub of student Sport life, fostering a vibrant culture of participation, competition and recreation. It provides students with opportunities to engage in organized and informal sporting activities, building a strong sense of community and institutional spirit.

Sports Equipment
All sports equipment is safely stored and managed by the Games Union to ensure it's available for student use. Students can access it through their team captains, coaches or directly from the Games Union Office. Equipment is issued for training, competitions and recreation, and must be signed out, used responsibly and returned in good condition. The Union keeps a full inventory, maintains and repairs gear when needed and regularly replaces worn-out items so every student has the tools to play, compete and enjoy sports at Makerere.
Sports and Games Offered
The Department offers a variety of sports which include athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, football, handball, hockey, martial arts, netball, rugby, scrabble, squash, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, woodball, etc.
Sports Facilities
- Football, volleyball, netball, hockey, basketball, tennis and ring tennis at the Main Sports Ground below Mary Stuart Hall.
- A multi-purpose indoor stadium between Nsibirwa and Mitchell Hall
- Rugby Pitch (Graveyard) below Nsibirwa Hall
- Handball pitch behind Africa Hall
- Badminton in Lumumba Hall
- All mind sports played within Halls of Residence.

Aims and Objectives
To introduce and stimulate internal games and sports of all kinds amongst the greatest number of students and to encourage the highest possible standards in these sports and games.
It represents you in sports leadership, plans and coordinates all games and activities, and ensures they follow university sports rules. The Union organizes exciting competitions, works with other institutions and keeps sports equipment in top shape all to create opportunities for every student to participate, compete and shine in sports at Makerere.

Membership
Student membership is open to all full-time students at Makerere University that are attached to a Hall of Residence. Registration for sports and activities is essential to each student.
