MISR Objectives

As an interdisciplinary research unit hosting a course-work based MPhil/PhD program in the humanities and social sciences, MISR aims to:

  • Train a new generation of researchers;
  • Reorient the direction of graduate training in the humanities and social sciences towards the decolonization of knowledge production;
  • Transform the curriculum with an eye to attaining a dual goal: maintain standards of excellence in the world of scholarship, and at the same time, make higher education relevant to the demands of policy makers and the wider society. MISR supports the pursuing of these aims through scholarship, research funding, workshops, and weekly seminars.

Underlining the doctoral program is an aspiration towards a model of higher education that will instil a sustainable culture of research and postgraduate training, combined with a deep and transformative engagement with the society at large. This is also consistent with the vision of the University institution where MISR is located: Makerere University, which is shifting towards a research led institution.

Scope of Research Activities

Interdisciplinary research activities encompass four cluster fields: Political Studies, Political Economy, Cultural and Literary Studies and Historical Studies. They are both global and local in nature. All research conducted at MISR engages global literature and develops, from the vantage point of Africa, research questions, models of theorizing and theoretical frameworks that are reflective of local concerns and global interconnections.
