The Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) for Finance and Administration oversees the finances and administration of the University. In this respect, the DVC is responsible for the planning, budgeting and development of the university.


Professor Barnabas Nawangwe is the former Acting Principal, College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), Makerere University. Prof. Nawangwe has acted on several occasions as DVC (AA) of Makerere University. Prior to that, he was the Dean of Faculty of Technology (2002-2009) and Head of the Department of Architecture from its inception in 1989 to 2002. He has chaired several University committees, including the University Research, Administrative and Financial Reforms Committee.

Prof. Nawangwe has supervised several Masters and PhD students. He has presented numerous papers at local and international conferences and published several articles in internationally reviewed journals and books. He has also been author to a number of research reports. Dr. Nawangwe is currently external Examiner at Nairobi University, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and Oslo School of Architecture. Associate Professor Nawangwe is a founder member and the National Coordinator of the Innovation Systems and Innovative Clusters Programme for Uganda.

This programme seeks to utilise the synergies of the triple helix (government, academia and business) to make Uganda’s businesses, especially SMEs more competitive nationally, regionally and globally. He was elected the first Chairman of the Council of the Pan-African Competitiveness Forum (PACF) in 2008. He is also a Board member of The Competitiveness Institute (TCI).

The Office

The DVC's office also oversees: Resource mobilization; Investment; Human Resource Management; Security; Estates and Works; and Procurement. Accordingly, the second DVC monitors the Finance Department, the Planning and Development Department, and the Security Department, among others.
